in late 2025, my friends from Seville, Macarena Madero Silva and Santiago Barber Cortés (Tekeando)—Santi and Maki!—called me. After several years of a kind of creative silence, they invited me to collaborate again. i knew that, as initiators and curators, they were involved in developing projects that brought together artists and scientists.
to my great delight, it wasn’t until that phone call that i understood they wanted me to give shape to the results of these projects in their current status. i had already worked with Santi on other documentation and publication projects in Seville (such as Il Gran Pollo de la Alameda and REU08), and i was very excited to work with his partner, Maki, for the first time. after getting to know the participants and their projects online over the course of a few sessions, i traveled to Seville a few weeks later to take part in the final working meeting with everyone involved. this gathering and the lively exchange sparked the idea for this publication. In the words of Tekeando:
DESPLIEGUES (unfoldings)
Publication of the Agitación científica (scientific agitation) 2025/2026 Working Group brings together projects, methodologies, questions, images and references emerging from encounters between artistic, scientific and place-based practices in Andalusia.
The publication accompanies the conclusion of the first Agitación científica Working Group, a space for exchange and collective research that extends the processes set in motion by the 2025 Call for Grants for Creation and Research by Teams of Artists, Scientists and Social Collectives, bringing the participating projects into dialogue with other forms of knowledge, experiences and ways of producing knowledge.
Organized into pieces that can be read independently or in relation to one another, the publication proposes a non-linear reading experience. Maps, cartographies, diagrams, archives, narratives and partial instructions invite readers to unfold, layer and rearrange the materials, creating their own paths and unexpected connections. Rather than documenting a et of definitive outcomes, the publication Despliegues functions as a tool for use and an open archive that extends the questions and processes shared.
Within the framework of Agitación científica, a programme promoted by the Universidad Internacional de Andalucía (UNIA) in collaborastion with Tekeando, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC), with the support of the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation, this publication explores alternative ways of relating art, science and territory, while questioning the conditions that determine which forms of knowledge gain public visibility and legitimacy.
